Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I courses are introductory, competency-based programs that equip students with foundational knowledge and skills in SMAW, focusing on safety, basic welding techniques, and interpreting technical drawings. 

Core Competencies:
  • Weld Carbon Steel Plates Using SMAW: This is the core skill taught in the course, focusing on performing basic welds on carbon steel plates. 
  • Apply Safety Practices: Students learn to identify and mitigate potential hazards, understand personal protective equipment (PPE), and adhere to industry safety standards. 
  • Interpret Drawings and Sketches: Students learn to read and understand technical drawings and sketches related to welding. 
  • Perform Industry Calculations: Students gain proficiency in industry-specific calculations, including material estimations, electrode consumption, and weld size calculations. 
  • Use Hand Tools: Students learn to use hand tools that are used in the welding process. 
  • Prepare Weld Materials: Students learn how to prepare weld materials for welding.
